Port Aransas Getaway

We have done well adhering to the stay at home policy for COVID-19. Over the last three months we have stayed home and only ventured out for essentials like groceries and prescriptions. Our property gives us the opportunity to get out to walk and exercise. We have put in some more work on our backyard landscaping finishing up the dry creek bed. Also mowed a large portion after the bluebonnets faded away.

Now that Texas is beginning to open up, we are still hesitant to press our luck with the virus. I think it will be some time before we are comfortable heading out to a restaurant. I went to the grocery on Sunday morning and it was not very crowded. However, it seems most folks no longer are wearing masks. I even got some strange looks as I did my shopping in my mask and carefully avoiding getting close to the other shoppers.

I read an article on activities that are lower risk and one of the suggestions was camping. It is an outdoor activity and does not involve direct contact with other people. Our RV allows us to stay self-contained and the RV parks are seldom crowded. So, we decided to take a short 3-night trip to Port Aransas.

It is about a 260-mile trip and takes about 5 hours. We stopped at a Rest Area on I-37 each way to let Ellie go for a walk. She travels well in the RV. We stayed at the Pioneer RV Resort in Port Aransas. The sites are a bit small. It would have been nice for a larger patio area and picnic table. However, the hookups were very convenient for electric, water and sewer. The AC kept the coach very comfortable.

The RV park is on the Gulf of Mexico and has a boardwalk that crosses the coastal dunes to the beach. While there were people enjoying the beach, it was not very crowded. We rose early on the second morning and went to the beach to watch the sunrise which was beautiful. The pelicans were plentiful and flew in formation up and down the beach. Alana had a great time taking photos and videos of them.

All in all, it was nice to get away for a change of scenery. While we are anxious to get on the road to explore Colorado and Utah, for now those plans will stay on hold. Perhaps a few short trips to nice locations here in Texas will do until the pandemic risk subsides…...which could be some time.
